Genre: High school drama/romance

 SHE'S ALL THAT (1999)

CLUELESS (1995)

BRING IT ON (2000)

AMERICAN PIE (1999)

JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE (2006)

A CINDERELLA STORY (2004)

In this certain type of genre, it is very typical for the film to have
(the genetic conventions):

What are the generic conventions of this genre?
  • Setting is in a High School
  • A teenage romance
  • Actress will be an understated beautiful girl
  • Actor will be a male teenage heart-throb
  • He is a footballer and she is a maths geek
  • She becomes friends with another maths geek (boy)
  • Her maths teacher is her favorite teacher who gives her advice
  • A group of popular 'bitches' are her enemy
  • A home-coming dance at the end of the year
  • A special kiss takes place at the end

I like the idea of a romance being involved in a movie as it is interesting to see how the two "lovers" gradually get together and become a couple in the end. Also i love seeing the makeover of the 'understated beautiful girl' when she is eventually shown at the end, how beautiful she really is; when they give her a change of costume along with hair and makeup. However i dont like the steretypical idea that only boys can be the "footballer" and the girl, is a "maths geeks". It could be either, and doing something different could be sometimes very cool too. For our group opening of a film (of this genre), i would like to involve a teenage romance, and also use the idea of having a home-coming dance at the end of the year. I think that, people who watch these type of genre movies, really expect there to be a "prom" or "a home-coming" dance (etc) at the end of the year, as it is usually the most predicted place to finally see the geek girl become beautiful. And everyone is usually amazed. I personally enjoy seeing this part of the movies. I would also definitely use the setting of a high school, and it creates the perfect atmosphere for a teenage romance movie.
